The European Union may be the world leader in dissolving borders and surrendering once sacred national responsibilities to supra-national bodies. Yet when it comes to open its borders to non-EU migrants, the EU appears increasingly as a “fortress”. With its expansion south and east it nearly reaches the shores of North Africa and Western Asia. The discrepancy in wealth and opportunities make the EU to a most desired destination. While recognizing the enormous efforts needed to further integrate 25 nations, the Union as a whole should develop a comprehensive immigration policy. It would help those closest to its southern and eastern boundaries, like Spain, Italy or Poland and Hungary, to deal fairly with an increasing flow of refugees, seeking to enter the fortress. ...more

For decades the European Union was as much about agriculture as about any other field of economic cooperation and integration. Though the share of the “Common Agricultural Policy” (CAP) in the EU’s budget has fallen, it still is close to 50 % of the total expenditure. The CAP has a tremendous impact on employment in agriculture, as it encourages efficiency in production, ensures farm incomes and aims at achieving reasonable food prices for consumers.
